A DAY & NIGHT TO REMEMBER IN SF-JUNE 26

June 26, 2012, was New York Giants Night at ATT Park in San Francisco with the foe being none other than the LA Dodgers. Things got underway at 2PM at the Larkspur Hotel on Sutter near Union Square. Assembling were Bat Boys Robert (Bobby) Weinstein (1954-56), Ed Logan (1957) and the SF Giants first one, Roy McKercher who won the job on a coin flip by long time Clubhouse Manager Eddie Logan. The loser of the coin flip was current Clubhouse Manager Mike Murphy who has been with the SF Giants since Day 1-April 15, 1958.
Former SF Giants CEO Peter Magowan also stopped by our pre-game schmooze. There was lots of NY Giants Memorabilia all around the room for the crowd to check out. Co-Presidents of the New York Giants Preservation Society Gary Mintz and Steve Rothschild hosted the event. Writer John McLaughlin also attended as did long time Giants Fan George Schiffner. Frank Daniel who has been a Giant Fan since 1948 and who has visited nearly 70 ballparks was also in attendance. Moe Resner whose End of an Era (a DVD of the last game at the Polo Grounds on 9/29/57) along with Female Baseball Umpire and Baseball Historian Perry Barber also attended .Dignitaries received T-Shirts from the New York Giants Preservation Society.
After about an hour of schmoozing and a phone call to Chris Durocher (son of the famous manager Leo Durocher) by the batboys, as well as a phone call to the New York Giants Visiting Team Batboy from 1953-55 Rich McCabe, the pre-game festivities came to an end at the hotel.

JOHNNY ANTONELLI: A BASEBALL MEMOIR

This is a brand new book written about and by Johnny Antonelli. Here is a synopsis from Amazon.com.-Gary

One of only 17 major-league players never to have spent a single day in the minors, Johnny Antonelli was a highly coveted phenom who signed a “bonus baby” contract with the Boston Braves for $52,000 a few days after graduating from Rochester’s Jefferson High School in 1948. It wasn’t until six years later, when he was traded to the New York Giants, that the stylish left-hander began realizing the potential the scouts had seen in him. In a seven-year stretch—from 1953–59—Antonelli was among baseball’s best hurlers, compiling a 114–89 record, 22 shutouts and nine saves, while being named a National League All-Star five times. Following his baseball career, Antonelli became a successful entrepreneur in the tire business. Enjoy this inside look at the Golden Age of baseball.

In this different era, Moe was allowed to walk on the field and mingle with ballplayers and baseball executives. It’s all captured in End of an Era, a captivating documentary. Perhaps the greatest amateur baseball documentary ever made.

Last New York Giants Game at the Polo Grounds- September 29, 1957

I went to the Polo Grounds not realizing the historical significance of what I was about to see. Had I NOT brought my movie camera with me, the events I memorialized on film would have just been a memory, seen by me and the 11,000 other fans who were there, many who didn’t even realize that this was the New York Giants’ last day at the fabled ball park. I saw no one else with a movie camera. I was free to walk on the field and met such greats as Mrs. John McGraw, manager Bill Rigney, and Bobby Thomson. Ceremonies included Hall of Fame pitchers Carl Hubbell and Rube Marquard, with Hans Lobert, Sal Maglie, Sid Gordon, Willie Mays, and many others. I even filmed part of the game, including the last home run hit by Pittsburgh. Continue reading
